Welcome from the commissioner

As the Commissioner of the Maryland – DC Amateur Softball Association I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to come aboard to make this organization the best it can be. With your help and with the help of those playing the game of softball we can bring this sport back to be a front runner in the sporting world within the Maryland – DC area.

In 2008 we had the privilege of having one of our teams Joe Corbie’s out of the Frederick area go to the East National Championship in Columbus, OHIO. They played their way out of a 113 team tournament to advance to the Hooters Championship in Oklahoma City, OK on September 25-28. At the Hooters Championship they went 4-0 to win the Men’s Class D National Championship. Our congratulation goes to all of the members of Joe Corbie’s.

2008 was a great year for all of us in the Maryland – DC association. We had the privilege of hosting the USA Women’s Olympic Softball team on their Tour 4 Beijing and the Olympic games. The event held at the Bowie Baysox Stadium on May 10, 2008. The turnout was more than I or anyone else ever expected. Needless to say we were the top city on the tour. There were 8,724 in attendance for that game, breaking all of the tour records for the year. Our thanks to all of you for supporting this great event. It is only out hope and prayers that in October of 2009 the IOC will vote to put the Women’s Softball back into the Olympic Games. If this committee who make this final selection could have seen the number of young ladies and the looks in their eyes of one day being able to play for our USA Olympic Team. Again we thank you for your support and hope that you will support the game of softball in the years to come.

Also our Junior Olympic Program has grown in many ways. Last year was the first time that I can recall holding a true Class B State Tournament. With this we had a total of 50 Plus teams playing in all divisions. Our JO Commissioner Jack Hutcherson has done an outstanding job and we owe him our thanks for a job well done. He and his deputies have shown those that ASA is active in the Maryland – DC area and ask for your continued support for our youth program.

At this year’s National Meeting held in Oklahoma City, OK ASA celebrated its 75th year. Out of this meeting many new changes were adopted and they are published on this web site. The Home Run Rule has been changed along with ASA adding an E/REC Division for Slow Pitch softball.

In November we hosted a National Coaches School and hitting clinic at the Mattapeak Elementary School on Kent Island on the Eastern Shore. Mike Candrea and his staff worked hard to show those in attendance what the game of softball is all about?

Our umpire program under the direction of Umpire in Chief Ray Barrier and his staff are working very hard to make the ASA umpire program the best it can be. If you are interested in joining the umpire ranks please contact Ray or one of his staff member listed on the Umpires page.

If you have any suggestions on how to better improve this program please do not hesitate in contacting someone on the staff or the commissioner of your concerns. With your input we can make this organization something that you and all can be proud of.

I have also put together a survey asking you the players for your input so we can make this program what you the players want.

Jack Mowatt, Commissioner
